Exercising After Covid

Exercising is an integral part of life and something that helps you to stay fit. However, at difficult times such as these, you should be cautious before doing anything, including exercising. This holds especially true if you had Covid and have recovered recently. Your body has gone through a lot and it is still recuperating. You may not have the Covid symptoms any longer, but your body may not be at its peak functioning rate yet. This is why you have to take several precautions and then exercise. Read on to know more.

Pre-Covid exercise routine
If you have been physically active and used to exercise regularly before Covid, you can start exercising again, after you recover and your quarantine ends. However, you need to go slow. You cannot immediately return to the usual high-intensity training. Covid causes a lot of strain and damage to the vital organs of the body such as the lungs and the heart. Remember that your organs are still healing, even though you are free of the virus. Go easy on yourself and start exercising in a gradual manner and pick up the pace over a period of time.

New to exercising
If you largely had a sedentary lifestyle before you got Covid and had minimal physical exercise, do not make the mistake of starting any fitness routine randomly. Be very, very careful and take the help of a fitness instructor who can guide you. Also, keep monitoring your heart rate, your oxygen levels, your BP, etc. If at any time you feel dizzy or unwell, stop exercising immediately and consult your doctor. Remember, your organs are recuperating and your body isn’t used to exercising, so the transition will take longer than usual.

Try yoga
The strenuous exercising routines may not be suitable when you are recovering from Covid. But you can start with some milk yoga asanas, especially the breathing exercises. Yoga has several health benefits such as improved lung health, better circulation, easing of stress and anxiety and an improved immune system. All of these help immensely in your recovery journey post-Covid. Practice yoga on a regular basis and build your strength and immunity up while you wait to be fit enough to resume your normal exercising routines.

Consult your doctor
Take expert medical advice at all times. Even if you decide to go for walks after recovering, check with your doctor. If your lungs have suffered considerable damage, you may get breathless easily and so your doctor may tell you how much you can walk at a go. Similarly, depending on your condition, your health care provider will tell you how to approach the fitness routine. Also, remember to eat well and rest adequately. Your body will need extra care at this time. So ideally, you should combine fitness, rest and diet and recover in a wholesome manner.
