Going through a breakup can be tough for most of us. After spending a considerable amount of time with someone and it falls apart, things can get a bit difficult and result in a few changes as well. However, a lot of that depends on the way someone had a breakup.
While some breakups are mutual and done over a drink or brunch, others might not be so lucky. Things can get messy, ugly, and even hurtful. There are no rules when it comes to maintaining a relationship with your ex. Yet, if you want to, the following should help you maintain a healthy relationship with them.
- Avoid Talking About Us:
The first step towards a healthy relationship with your ex is to get over the relationship. As long as both have moved on from the relationship and accept each other as good friends, you can establish a healthy relationship. And a healthy relationship would only take shape after you get over the ill words spoken, your hearts have healed, and you both don’t constantly discuss what went wrong with the relationship.
You can talk about some of the memories or funny incidents, as long as it involves the situation and not both of you. For example, you can talk about the amazing mountain ranges that you had been to but not about what happened between both of you.
- Welcome New People:
To maintain a healthy relationship with your ex, you must welcome the new person in their life with an open mind. This however does not mean that you go out of your way to become their best friend. If you met at a common event, you should be able to introduce yourself and her to other friends or colleagues without any hesitation.
If the new partner likes you, the chances are high that they will be comfortable with the relationship.
- Drawing A Line:
If it turns out that you guys are seeing each other more often than other friends or new people, you might want to re-assess why you are not together. Also, it might not be the best idea to invite your ex and their new partner on a weekend trip. Even though there might be a lot of other couples or friends, it is in your best interest to avoid such situations. Also, you can skip the wedding invitation to your exes. While inviting them for a birthday party might be fine, weddings are a different ballgame altogether.
- No Sneaking Around
It is always a good idea to come clean with your current partner about your relationship with your ex, right from the beginning. Should you feel that an email or a text message might make your current partner uncomfortable, avoid sending them or dissuade your ex from doing the same.
You can consider a healthy relationship with your ex, only after you both have moved on from each other. The above steps will help you with the same.
